Anchor text of external links affects ranking. Links with SEO focused anchor text needs to be relevant to the target page. Backlinks are arguably the most important single component of an online marketing/SEO campaign because they not only help to drive traffic, but also further increase your PageRank and therefore likelihood of appearing high up in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). The more competitive the keyword, the more meticulous the on page optimization should be to offset the tendency for attrition or recession in the SERPs. Don’t get fooled by those agencies that offer 100% guarantee to get your website amongst the top results in a short time. The only one who can do this are Search Engines (which you can’t fool) themselves. Choosing a perfect focus keyword is not an exact science. You should use descriptive anchor text for all your text links. It plays a significant role and is seen by most of the search engines. Searchers are typing longer queries that trigger fewer paid search matches, and they are increasingly recognizing the difference between organic and paid results and have growing ad blindness.

Overall, this is a good thing because they’re providing what searchers are looking for even more quickly, without requiring searchers to make extra choices. The fundamental principle for structuring URLs is to choose a format that is easy for users and search engines alike to understand. Website URLs should contain words and phrases arranged in a logical order and convey what the content is about before opening the page. When your website or website’s content gets shared on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Google+, and YouTube, it is considered a social signal or citation.
Content is king or customer is king?
Your goal should be to create links to individual posts/pages along with those leading to your homepage. A large chunk of my time finding links is by looking through my competitor's link profiles. Essentially, you're piggy backing off of their success. To best understand your backlink profile, it makes sense to look at a few top level KPI’s such as the referring domains and IP’s, the country from where the backlink is coming from, and the Top-Level-Domain. Paid link-building is considered black hat SEO and is likely to incur a penalty. Don’t rely on the tips you read from unknown sources. If somebody discovers the secret to rank first on Google for competitive keywords, it’s very unlikely that they will share it with strangers.
